📢 Chapter 3 — The Late Night DM That Changed Everything 🌙
There was this guy named — a , which means he was top-tier in the religious world. Think: verified account, massive following, sits on the . This man had credentials for days. But something about had been living rent free in his head. The signs, the teachings, the authority — it didn't add up unless God was behind it.
So Nicodemus did something that tells you everything you need to know about where he was at. He came to Jesus at night. On the DL. Because a man in his position couldn't exactly be seen rolling up to this controversial rabbi from in broad daylight. What followed was a conversation that would produce the most famous verse in history and completely redefine what it means to start over.
The Night Visit 🌑
Nicodemus showed up under cover of darkness and opened with a compliment — but it was genuine:
"Rabbi, we know you're a teacher sent from God. Nobody can do the signs you're doing unless God is with him."
That's a big deal coming from a . Nicodemus wasn't throwing shade — he was acknowledging something the rest of the religious elite refused to admit. He saw the evidence and couldn't ignore it. But Jesus didn't even let him finish his thought before flipping the whole conversation. 🌙
Born Again (Not What You Think) 🔄
Instead of accepting the compliment, Jesus went straight to the deepest truth Nicodemus needed to hear:
Jesus said: "I'm telling you the truth — unless someone is , they can't even see the ."
Nicodemus was shook. This didn't compute:
"How can someone be born when they're old? You can't just crawl back into your mother's womb and start over. That's not how any of this works."
Fair question, honestly. But Jesus wasn't talking about biology:
Jesus said: "Here's what I'm saying — unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, they cannot enter the . What's born from flesh is flesh. What's born from the Spirit is spirit. Don't be so surprised that I told you 'You must be .'
Jesus said: The wind blows wherever it wants. You hear it, but you don't know where it comes from or where it's going. That's how it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
Nicodemus still wasn't tracking:
"How is any of this possible?"
And Jesus hit him with the reality check:
Jesus said: "You're THE teacher of and you don't understand this? We're speaking from what we know and testifying to what we've seen — but you won't accept it. If I tell you about earthly things and you don't believe, how are you going to handle heavenly things?"
That's a humbling moment. Nicodemus had spent his whole life studying and still missed the core of what God was doing. All the head knowledge in the world doesn't replace a heart that's been made new by the Spirit. 🧠
The Snake on a Pole (It's Lore) 🐍
Jesus kept going, and here's where He started dropping hints about His own mission:
Jesus said: "No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven — the . And just like Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, the must be lifted up — so that everyone who believes in Him will have ."
(Quick context: Back in Numbers 21, was dying from snake bites because of their rebellion. God told to put a bronze snake on a pole — anyone who looked at it was healed. Jesus is saying He's about to be lifted up on a cross the same way, and anyone who looks to Him in will be saved.)
Jesus was literally telling Nicodemus how He was going to die — and why it would matter for everyone. The came down from to be lifted up so that people could live. That's the whole plot. 👑
The Verse. THE Verse. 🏆
Then Jesus said the words that would end up on signs, bumper stickers, and the bottom of In-N-Out cups for the rest of human history:
Jesus said: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him won't perish but have ." 🔥
Let that hit you. Every word matters:
"God so loved" — this starts with God's love, not your performance. "The world" — not just Israel, not just good people, not just people who have it together. Everyone. "That He gave" — love isn't just a feeling; it cost God everything. "His only Son" — the most precious thing in existence. "Whoever believes" — it's an open invitation. No prerequisites, no waitlist. "Won't perish but have " — the alternative to destruction is life that never ends.
That's the whole in 26 words. No cap. 💯
Light vs. Darkness 💡🌑
Jesus kept going, and what He said next matters just as much as verse 16:
Jesus said: "God didn't send His Son into the world to condemn it — He sent Him to save it. Whoever believes in Him isn't condemned. But whoever doesn't believe is condemned already, because they haven't put their trust in the name of God's only Son.
Jesus said: And here's the verdict: the light came into the world, and people chose the darkness instead because their actions were evil. Everyone doing wrong hates the light and avoids it so their actions won't be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so it's clear that what they've done has been done through God."
This is where it gets real. isn't God being petty — it's people choosing darkness when the light is right there. Jesus didn't come to destroy anyone. He came to rescue. But rescue requires you to actually step into the light, even when it's uncomfortable. The light doesn't just expose what's wrong — it shows that everything good in your life was God's work all along. ✨
Meanwhile, John's Disciples Are Salty 😤
Scene change. Jesus and His headed out into the countryside and started people. At the same time, was still doing his thing at Aenon near Salim — there was plenty of water there, and people were still coming to him.
(Quick context: John the Baptist hadn't been thrown in prison yet. So for a brief window, both he and Jesus were in the same region.)
Then some of John's got into an argument with a Jewish man about purification rituals. And they came to John with the real issue:
"Rabbi, that guy who was with you across the Jordan — the one you testified about — He's now too, and everyone is going to Him instead of us."
You can hear the jealousy. Their guy was losing followers and they wanted John to do something about it. But John's response? One of the most secure, selfless things anyone has ever said. 🎤
The Ultimate Hype Man 🎤
John the Baptist didn't panic. He didn't get competitive. He said this:
"Nobody can receive anything unless heaven gives it to them. You heard me say it yourselves — I am not the . I was sent ahead of Him to prepare the way.
Think of it like a wedding. The groom is the one who gets the bride. The best man? He just stands there, listens for the groom's voice, and when he hears it — he's filled with joy. That's me right now. My joy is complete.
He must become greater. I must become less."
"He must increase, but I must decrease." That's one of the hardest sentences to actually live out. John the Baptist had his own following, his own platform, his own clout — and he watched it all shift to someone else and called it exactly what it was: the plan working perfectly. No ego. No bitterness. Just a man who understood his assignment. That's goated behavior. 🫶
The One From Above ⚡
The chapter closes with a declaration about who Jesus really is:
"The one who comes from above is above everything. The one from earth belongs to the earth and speaks from an earthly perspective. But the one from heaven is above all. He testifies to what He has seen and heard, and yet nobody accepts His testimony. But whoever does accept it confirms that God is true.
The one God sent speaks God's words — because God gives the Spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in His hands. Whoever believes in the Son has . Whoever rejects the Son will not see life — God's wrath remains on them."
That ending is heavy, and it's supposed to be. This isn't a suggestion. The whole chapter has been building to this: Jesus isn't one option among many. He's the Son sent from the Father, speaking the words of God, filled with the Spirit without limit. Believing in Him means . Rejecting Him means staying under the weight of everything you were never meant to carry alone. The invitation is wide open — but it's not neutral. 💯
