Genesis 16 — A desperate plan, a runaway servant, and a God who shows up in the wilderness

God had made an enormous Promise — descendants as numerous as the stars, a great nation, a legacy that would bless the whole world. But years had passed. A decade in , and still had no children. The promise was real. The waiting was brutal. And when the waiting got unbearable, they decided to help God along.
What happens next is one of the most honest stories in the Bible. No one comes out looking great. But right in the middle of the mess, God shows up for the person everyone else forgot about — and she becomes the first person in to give God a name.
Here's the situation. and had been waiting on God's promise of a child for years. Ten years in , to be exact. And nothing. No pregnancy, no sign, no update.
So came to with a plan. And in that culture, it would have made complete sense — this was actually a common legal practice in the ancient Near East. A wife who couldn't conceive could offer her servant as a surrogate, and any child born would legally be the wife's. said:
"The Lord has kept me from having children. Sleep with my servant — maybe I can build a family through her."
And agreed. No pushback. No "let me pray about it." No "maybe we should wait on what God actually said." He just went along with it. So took Hagar — her Egyptian servant — and gave her to as a wife.
Here's what's worth noticing: the plan wasn't irrational. It was culturally acceptable. It even had a kind of logic to it. But it wasn't what God had said. God had made the promise. God hadn't asked for help. This is what happens when you get tired of waiting and start engineering your own version of what God said he'd do. The plan makes sense on paper — and it creates a disaster in real life.
It worked — technically. Hagar conceived. But the moment she knew she was pregnant, the power dynamic shifted. Hagar started looking at with contempt. She had something couldn't produce, and she knew it.
was furious. But instead of owning her role in the situation, she turned on :
"This is YOUR fault! I put my servant in your arms, and now that she's pregnant, she looks down on me. May the Lord judge between you and me!"
And response? He washed his hands of it completely. He told :
"She's your servant. Do whatever you want with her."
So treated Hagar so harshly that Hagar ran away.
Let that settle for a moment. Everyone here is doing something wrong. Hagar responded to her pregnancy with arrogance. responded to the pain she helped create by blaming everyone else. And — the man God called, the man with the promise — just stepped back and let someone else take the hit. Nobody protected Hagar. She was used for someone else's plan, mistreated when it backfired, and abandoned when she needed someone to step in. She was a person caught in other people's decisions with no voice and no power.
This is a heavy part of the story. And the Bible doesn't sanitize it.
Hagar ran. She was heading toward — back the way she came, back to the only home she'd ever known. Alone. Pregnant. No plan.
And then this:
The of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, on the road to Shur. He called her by name:
"Hagar, servant of Sarai — where have you come from, and where are you going?"
Hagar answered honestly:
"I'm running from my mistress Sarai."
The of the Lord told her:
"Go back to your mistress and submit to her."
That's a hard instruction. We'll come back to it. But then the added something extraordinary:
"I will multiply your descendants so greatly that they will be too many to count."
Think about who's receiving this Promise. Not . Not . Hagar — a foreign servant, a runaway, a woman with zero social standing. And God met her personally, called her by name, and gave her a promise that sounds a lot like what he'd already told . God went looking for the person nobody else went looking for. She didn't find him. He found her.
The of the Lord wasn't done. He gave Hagar something no one else had given her — a future to look forward to:
"You are pregnant, and you will have a son. Name him Ishmael — because the Lord has heard your pain.
He will be wild and free, a man who won't be tamed. He'll be in conflict with everyone around him, and he'll live his life right alongside all his relatives."
The name Ishmael means "God hears." Not "God heard " or "God heard ." God heard Hagar. Her suffering. Her crying. Her pain in a situation she didn't choose. God doesn't just hear the people with the big promises and the main storylines. He hears the people in the margins — the ones caught in someone else's mess, the ones running because staying hurt too much.
The description of Ishmael is vivid — untamed, independent, always in friction with the world around him. It's not a curse. It's a prediction. His descendants would be fierce, free, and impossible to ignore. Not an easy life. But a one.
And then Hagar did something remarkable. She became the first person in the Bible to give God a name:
"You are the God who sees me."
She said:
"I have truly seen the One who watches over me."
The spring where it happened was named Beer-lahai-roi — "the well of the Living One who sees me." It sits between Kadesh and Bered.
This is one of the most powerful moments in Genesis. Hagar was invisible to everyone. Used by . Abandoned by . Alone in a desert. And she discovered something that changed everything: God saw her. Not in some abstract theological sense. He literally showed up, called her name, acknowledged her pain, and gave her a future.
If you've ever felt invisible — overlooked at work, unseen in your family, carrying pain that nobody asks about — this moment is for you. The God of the Bible is not just the God of the main characters. He is the God who sees the Hagars. The people with no platform, no power, no voice. He finds them by wells in the wilderness and speaks their name.
Hagar went back. She had the baby. And named his son Ishmael — just as God had said. was eighty-six years old.
It's a quiet ending to a complicated chapter. The Promise God made to about a son through ? Still unfulfilled. That would take another fourteen years. But in the meantime, God took care of Hagar and Ishmael. The detour didn't cancel God's plan — but God still showed up in the detour. He still heard. He still saw. He still made promises and kept them.
Sometimes the most important thing in the Bible isn't what the main characters are doing. It's what God is doing with the person no one was watching.
